Programming In Lua

Russell Haley
Hi,

Some of you may know that Roblox is a massive online gaming system that allows users to create their own games. The games are scripted in Lua (5.1). My seven year old son has started making Roblox games, which mostly consists of WYSIWYGs and editors. He is now at the point where he wants to start understanding the scripts that he gets from the Youtube tutorials. The link below is a picture of my seven year old son reading Programming in Lua:

Very inspiring!

When my oldest daughter was about 4 she was always watching me on the computer. So I spent $$ to buy her one of those oversized trackballs for kids, thinking the mouse would be too difficult. I also bought her a Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing program. She used the track ball for roughly two days and shoved it aside in favor of the mouse. But she could touch type very well by first grade. Today she does project implementation for a software company serving casinos. :)

Same for me, except for me it was a Tandy PC-4 pocket computer with BASIC and the accompanying guidebook with code for a bunch of games. I played the games for a while, and eventually that led to hacking on the code and then writing my own programs at 8 years old. It took me 12 years after high school to decide what I wanted to do with my life, but I'm now getting ready to start my senior year of university next week, majoring in computer science.
